Why Advanced Materials Are Changing the Way Micro-Drills Are Made

Aircraft lightweighting, electronics miniaturization and vehicle electrification are pushing manufacturers to fit more performance into smaller, lighter components. Carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) helps reduce structural mass, while silicon carbide (SiC) supports compact, efficient power systems. Many resulting components require smaller, tighter-tolerance holes in materials selected for performance rather than machinability. Therefore, toolmakers are creating micro-drills that preserve cutting geometry and hole quality through more drilling cycles. Hyperion Materials & Technologies examines how thick PCD blanks provide the usable diamond volume needed to meet that demand.

At the Micro Scale, Wear Becomes a Quality Problem

PCD Micro Drill in action

Micro-drills have little tolerance for edge rounding, chipping, or dimensional change. CFRP repeatedly exposes the cutting edge to hard, abrasive fibers and a softer polymer matrix, while SiC combines extreme hardness and abrasiveness with brittle behavior. Even slight geometry loss can push hole diameter, surface finish, or feature quality outside specifications. Productive tool life therefore depends on preserving the point, cutting edges, relief and flutes, not simply keeping the drill from breaking.

Thick PCD Gives Toolmakers More Design Space

PCD provides the wear resistance needed for abrasive non-ferrous materials, but diamond selection alone does not determine what a toolmaker can build. Thick Compax™ Drill Pin Blanks combine a cemented tungsten carbide base with a thick, usable PCD section. Hyperion examines how greater usable PCD volume influences micro-scale cutting geometry, manufacturing flexibility, and the productive life of a finished drill.
