Customer Newsletter December 2019

Nice to meet you (again)!

It’s been a while since we last reached out — hope this finds you well. Back in July of 2018, we made our official transition to Hyperion Materials & Technologies from Sandvik Hyperion. During this time, we’ve been working hard to make sure we’re delivering the best possible services and offerings to you. We’re proud of what we’ve been able to achieve, and we’re excited to share how far we’ve come.

The New Hyperion

Hyperion Materials & Technologies is a global leader in hard and super-hard materials. With more than 60 years of experience in cemented carbide, diamond and cubic boron nitride technologies, we offer an extensive portfolio of products and the expertise to develop custom solutions for the most demanding applications.

From the CEO

We are hyper focused on your needs

Hyperion's Ron Voigt

In July, we celebrated our first year as an independent company. In a short amount of time, we cemented our leadership team, established an independent presence around the world and engaged our entire workforce through an employee equity program.

With these building blocks in place, we can put even more focus on innovating for our customers and creating best-in-class products. Some recent examples include:

  • Our new BZN® Compacts VS-Series, which features a new chain of polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN) grades for fabrication into tools for hardened steel turning and milling and powder metal machining

  • The successful industrialization of diamond-faced carbide valve and seat sub-assemblies used in directional drilling for a major oil and gas client

  • Unique concepts and solutions for vitrified cubic boron nitride (CBN) grinding applications

During the next year, we look forward to accelerating the introduction of new technologies and expanding our expertise and global reach.

Ron Voigt, CEO

First year of independence

Celebrating a legacy of expertise and a future of infinite possibilities

More than a year after KKR’s investment, we are making Hyperion 1-year anniversary great progress in our plans to enhance our position as a global leader in advanced materials.

We know Hyperion Materials & Technologies might be a new name to some of you, but you know us from our decades of material science breakthroughs as Sandvik Hard Materials, Diamond Innovations and GE Superabrasives.

We are proud of our heritage, and we are excited for our future as we continue to empower our customers with innovative technologies and material solutions.

Learn more about our rich heritage and technological know-how.

Expanding our Expertise

AFC Hartmetall

Acquisition of AFC Hartmetall will boost carbide blank capabilities

We are extremely excited about our recent agreement to acquire AFC Hartmetall, which will strengthen our position as a leading global producer of tungsten carbide blanks. The addition of AFC will be highly complementary to our business, enabling us to expand our product portfolio, add production capabilities and increase support for toolmakers.

AFC is a Germany-based global manufacturer of premium tungsten carbide rods used to make high precision rotary cutting tools for metal drilling and milling applications. AFC has a talented workforce of about 200 and, like us, a reputation for providing clients with innovative solutions. AFC possesses a wide range of differentiated production capabilities, including the ability to manufacture carbide rods with twisted coolant channels.

While the transaction is subject to regulatory approval, we expect the deal to close during the fourth quarter of this year, and we look forward to the many ways this growth opportunity will benefit our customers.

Supply Chain

Hyperion fulfillment center

Fulfillment centers execute interruption-free transition

Another major step in the path to becoming a standalone company included maintaining our supply chain with minimal or no interruptions for our customers.

During the past year, our staff seamlessly executed this transition, which included setting up our two fulfillment centers — the Americas Fulfillment Center (AFC) at our headquarters in Worthington, Ohio, U.S., and the European Fulfillment Center (EFC) in Barcelona, Spain.

In the case of the EFC, we relocated all warehouse and distribution operations from a facility in the Netherlands during the span of several weeks at the end of 2018 and beginning of 2019. The EFC supports finished goods produced at multiple locations, and the project included moving and integrating products, equipment, systems and personnel.

Centers inspire constant innovation

Our technology team, which consists of more than 100 experts around the globe, ensures a bright future by developing and industrializing new technologies to meet our customers’ most demanding challenges.

The team’s efforts are concentrated at two facilities, our Materials Analysis Laboratory in Worthington, Ohio, U.S., and our Carbide Research & Development Center in Barcelona, Spain. In Worthington, the site of the world’s first synthesized diamond, our team performs cutting-edge work in diamond, polycrystalline diamond (PCD), cubic boron nitride (CBN), polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN) and related materials. We established the center in Barcelona in 2017 and recruited new team members to ensure our carbide expertise remains at the forefront.

We also have satellite R&D centers at our production units around the world, meaning our customers always have access to our expertise.
