WORTHINGTON, Ohio — Engineers, technicians and materials experts from Hyperion Materials & Technologies volunteered Nov. 2 to demonstrate processes involving science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to hundreds of local children during Edheads’ Super STEM Saturday at The Shops at Worthington Place.

Edheads is a nonprofit that partners with corporations, universities and school systems to empower students to pursue fulfilling, productive careers, and Super STEM Saturday is the organization’s annual Central Ohio outreach event that features professionals who provide hands-on learning opportunities in their respective fields.

Hyperion staff volunteering at Edheads Hyperion was one of about a dozen employers from the region that partnered with Edheads for this year’s event, which took over the center courtyard of the mall. Each participating organization set up displays, activities, games and simulations that represented their respective fields.

Hyperion, which manufactures industrial diamonds and other advanced materials such as tungsten carbide, demonstrated materials science through several exhibits. A group of employees from the company’s global headquarters on Huntley Road led activities that included operating an industrial robot, learning about 3D printing, viewing materials through a microscope and sieving diamonds to separate by grain size.

“This was a great opportunity to show young students how we use science to create our products,” said Susanne Sowers, a Technology Manager and chemical engineer who develops new products for Hyperion. “I want children and their parents to know that high-tech companies are always looking for talented people. We want to inspire young students to pursue these in-demand STEM careers and provide their parents with the information they need to guide their kids’ success.”
