Bodymaker Tooling Solutions

Optimized solutions for bodymaker can tooling applications including steel tools, cemented carbides, and zirconia ceramics.

Bodymaker tooling is responsible for shaping the can body from the cup blank made in the cupper press. Hyperion Materials & Technologies is a leading manufacturer of cemented carbide bodymaker tooling that can withstand the high pressures and speeds involved in the drawn and wall-ironed (DWI) can manufacturing process, while also maintaining precise tolerances for can dimensions.

Cemented carbide bodymaker tooling offers a number of advantages over traditional tool materials, such as steel. Cemented carbide is more durable and wear-resistant, ensuring longer tool life and increased production volume per tool. Hyperion offers a wide range of carbide grades and partners with customers to tailor tool designs to meet the specific needs of each can maker and provides engineering support and technical services to help can makers optimize bodymaker tool performance.

Punch Tools

Can punch tools are responsible for shaping the body of the can from the aluminum cup formed in the cupper press, ensuring that cans with precise dimensions and tolerances are produced efficiently and consistently.

Ring Tools

Ring tools, including ironing and redraw dies, work together to shape and finish the can body. Ironing dies are used to gradually reduce the wall thickness of the can while maintaining the required diameter.

Domer Tools

Domer tools include dome dies and outer retainer or hold down rings that are used in the can bodymaker to form the concaved bottom of a can body. The bottom of the drawn can body is pressed into the dome die to form the can’s concave bottom. The outer retainer or hold down ring is responsible for supporting the can body during the doming process.

Other Tool Solutions

A punch nose is a tool located in the can bodymaker that is used to create the opening at the top of the can during the manufacturing process. Punch noses produced by Hyperion are made of either coated or uncoated steel.

Punch bolts are threaded bolts that secure the can punch to the ram inside the bodymaking machine to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the bodymaker. Punch bolts are made of high strength steel coated with a thin layer of tungsten carbide for improved durability.

Redraw sleeves are tools used in the can manufacturing process to redraw or reshape the metal for the can body. The redraw sleeve is placed over the can body and then pressed down, forcing the can body into the desired shape. Redraw sleeves are typically made of a hard and durable material, such as cemented carbide or ceramic.

FAQs About Bodymaker Tooling

Can Hyperion support design and troubleshooting of can tooling for the bodymaker?

In partnership with LPS, Hyperion supports can makers to develop and improve bodymaker tooling designs and create processes to increase line efficiencies and reduce spoilage. This includes on-site training for drawn and ironed can manufacturing processes, plant audits, downgauging projects and ongoing problem-solving support.

What tungsten carbide grades are available for Hyperion’s bodymaker tooling?

Hyperion has the capability to produce bodymaker tooling in a variety of standard and premium carbide grades, as well as other high-performance materials.

  • Hyperion’s can punches are available in the standard carbide grades S385, H12N, and S323. Premium grades available for can punch production include DZ10 and Hyperion’s lightweight grade DZ18, which provides can manufacturers a lower density option that can help reduce changeover times and longer tool life than standard grades

  • Hyperion’s redraw dies can be produced in standard carbide grade H10F, or in the premium carbide grade C9M that provides much higher thermal crack resistance.

  • Hyperion’s redraw sleeves are produced with standard carbide grades H12N or S385, and white ceramic.

  • Hyperion produces ironing dies in standard carbide grade H6F that provides a good balance between high wear and impact resistance

  • The outer retainer / hold down ring / clamp ring is available in standard carbide grades H12N and S385, but can also be manufactured in ceramic or tool steel (coated or uncoated).

Can Hyperion support with the recycling of our used carbide bodymaker tooling?

Hyperion can support can makers with their carbide recycling needs by purchasing used carbide bodymaker tooling and components, including can punches, ironing dies, redraw dies, and outer retainer/hold down rings, to recycle the carbide to turn into valuable raw material for future tools.
