Machining of hardened steels continues to be ever more challenging as alloying compositions change and machine tools and fabrication features evolve. The variety of applications at any end user requires a stocking of multiple polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN) grades. Thus, there is an inherent need for PCBN grades that can adequately cover these wide ranging applications. With this motivation, Hyperion Materials & Technologies developed and manufactures the BZN® V-Series, i.e., Versatility-Series, to allow customers maximum flexibility in machining of hardened ferrous materials.
The BZN V-Series grades are designed to provide versatility in three key aspects:
- Workpiece composition – case hardened, bearing steels, powder metal alloys, alloy steels, and tool steels
- Application demands – turning, milling, and reaming
- Component type – bearings, shafts, gears, CV joint components, valve seat machining, and die/mold components.
In addition to to versatility in applications, the BZN V-Series provides customers with enhanced wear and fracture resistance, performance repeatability, and uniform layer thickness.
Cutting speed comparisons among BZN products
BZN V35 Compacts
BZN V35 grade consists of a titanium nitride binder with 70 to 75% CBN content. The grade is designed for applications requiring superior edge toughness, such as medium to heavy interrupted cutting of hardened steels. It can also provide excellent chipping resistance in continuous cutting of high alloy powder metal applications. Typical cutting speeds are 80 to 150 m/min with 0.05 to 0.40 mm depth of cut.
Applications: heavy interrupted turning, valve seat machining, and CV join applications.
BZN V20 grade consists of titanium based ceramic binder with 60 to 65% CBN content. The grade is designed for applications that require a balance of flank and crater wear resistance and is applicable in both wet and dry conditions. BZN V20 is most suitable for machining applications with cutting speeds in the range of 100 to 175 m/min and cutting depths of 0.05 to 0.3 mm.
Applications: hardened steel (wet and dry), valve seat materials, and cold work tool steels.
BZN V25 grade consists of titanium nitride binder with 60 to 65% CBN content. The grade is designed for continuous to medium interrupted applications and has a good balance of wear and toughness properties. Depending on the application severity, the grade is most suitable for cutting speeds in the range of 140 to 220 m/min and cutting depths of 0.05 to 0.3 mm.
Applications: medium interrupted turning, powder metal machining, and CV join applications.
