How are SynLap Slurries Specified?

SynLap Slurries is a mixture of water and small solid particles. The particles are not normally suspended in the liquid but are maintained in suspension by agitation during the use of the slurry to “settle” out the diamond particles. SynLap Slurries are best suited for lapping and polishing applications.

At Hyperion Materials & Technologies, the solid particles are micron sized diamond particles, and the liquid (carrier vehicle) can be oil or water based. Oil or emulsions are the most common. Our SynLap slurries have a higher viscosity than suspensions but can still be poured easily from a bottle. Highly viscous slurries are often referred to as “gels.”

We produce unique stabilized slurries in both oil and water-based products. Stabilized slurries delay the “settling” out of the diamond particles. This produces a more homogeneous product and minimizes the risk of fluctuation concentrations. In most cases a stabilized slurry will have a slightly increased viscosity over the non-stabilized product.

SynLap Slurries are specified internally by:

  • Diamond Type
  • Diamond Size
  • Concentration of Diamond
  • Chemical Components of the Slurry
  • Viscosity of the Slurry

SynLap Slurries Applications

SynLap slurries can be used in a wide variety of applications in both lapping and polishing:

  • Lapping of high-pressure ceramic seals (silicon carbide for example)
  • Lapping of orthopedic implants
  • Lapping of sapphire substrates prior to polishing
  • Lapping of sapphire watch glass prior to polishing
  • Lapping of metallic components

This product line is an expansion of our Hyperion material & technologies Ireland offerings helping you find the right fit for your tool application. Contact your local Hyperion salesperson for expertise in selecting the diamond slurry best suited to solve your needs.

Hyperion also manufactures a range of CBN Mesh, micron CBN Powders, and high-quality mesh diamonds.
